Is Your Child’s Backpack Making the Grade?

As a chiropractor and father of two school-aged children Dr. Silbert is concerned that a new and disturbing trend has emerged, 40 million students carry backpacks to school that are overstuffed and too heavy. For young people the problems that can result may have drastic long-term health implications. Common problems are neck pain, back pain, fatigue, headaches, arm and finger numbness and tingling. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that over 7000 emergency room visits each year result from injuries related to book bags. The Overloaded Backpack is the New School Yard Bully!

Backpack Safety Tips:
  • Carry no more than 10-15% of your body weight
  • Exercise
  • Use both shoulder straps
  • Lift and wear (appropriate sized) backpack correctly
  • Consult our office. We detect and correct spinal problems in children to help avoid the often difficult to correct problems we see in adults.
  • Avoid use of "rolling backpacks", as they tend to be overstuffed and too heavy

Most people recognize the value of chiropractic care for adults. Newborns, infants and children can benefit too! A more normally working nervous system and spine can help everyone. Many parents report that while under chiropractic care, their children miss less school and seem healthier than other children.
